The government announced a new damage estimate for the Nankai Trough Megathrust Earthquake on March 31, 2025.
NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) reported that the previous estimate for Nankai Trough earthquake, released ten years ago, was updated on March 31st. The worst-case scenario now projects 298,000 deaths, slightly lower than the previous estimate of over 320,000. Efforts to improve disaster preparedness have helped reduce the number, and strengthening earthquake resistance further could save even more lives.
The expected tsunami could reach:
3 meters or more in 25 prefectures from Fukushima to Okinawa
10 meters or more in 13 prefectures from Kanto to Kyushu
Over 30 meters in some areas of Kochi and Shizuoka prefectures
